I've lived in Costa Rica for 25 years and founded Americana Sportfishing 20 years ago. It’s what I do for a living. For six years I wrote the weekly fishing column for the Tico Times, the largest English-language newspaper in Central America. That column kept me in touch with fishing captains, guides, hotel managers, sportfishing lodge owners and, even more important, my clients.
That gave me a tremendous advantage over people booking fishing trips to Costa Rica out of their U.S. or Canadian offices, who visit here perhaps once a year at best, if ever.
I LIVE HERE. I fish myself. I see and talk to the fishing captains — guys like Bobby McGuinness out of Golfito, who was named the world's top captain of 2006 by the International Game Fish Association, and who again cracked the the the IGFA's Top 10 list of guides and captains from around the world for 2008, setting 13 IFGA world records — and boat owners often.
